Lisa Small

BSE Ambassador
Lisa Small, Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering Ambassador

Lisa Small is a BSE senior from Williamsburg, VA with an ecological engineering concentration. She has always been surrounded by wetlands and streams from living near the Chesapeake Bay, so she has a large passion for water quality and stream health. She finds purpose in engineering sustainable solutions to the world’s water management problems as well as educating others about the environment. For two summers in her college experience, Lisa worked as an instructor and counselor at a environmental education and conservation summer camp where she taught classes in botanical sciences, biological systems, soil sciences, and environmental anthropology. This past summer, she worked as a stormwater engineering intern at WithersRavenel, a multidisciplinary engineering firm. Within her position, she worked on projects relating to erosion and sediment control, flood prevention, and stormwater control measure enhancements. Sharing knowledge about BSE is especially important to Lisa, including serving as a BSE ambassador.

After graduation, Lisa wants to continue her pursuits in stormwater engineering to become a professional engineer in that field. Not only will this include creating and implementing engineering solutions, but also helping the community. Lisa is also involved in the Marching Virginians to provide an electric gameday atmosphere at Virginia Tech and Tau Beta Sigma, the national honorary band service sorority. She also enjoys hiking, camping, and cooking with her friends.

Lisa is thankful to be a part of the BSE department and super excited to serve as a BSE ambassador to share that appreciation and excitement with others!
