Focus: Wastewater-based surveillance, drinking water safety, onsite wastewater treatment, and antimicrobial resistance
Sarah's research centers on the expansion of wastewater-based surveillance techniques to rural and unsewered communities. I'm broadly interested in wastewater treatment, with a focus on onsite units such as septic systems, and in assessing the potential for treated effluents to contaminate soil, private wells, and surface waters.
Sewage is also a bountiful source of information on the population it comes from! As part of the CIP-CAR NSF research traineeship (NRT), Sarah and her peers have performed both primary and secondary research for the use of environmental and wastewater-based surveillance to monitor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as well as some infectious disease trends.
