Mia Wichmann

BSE Ambassador
a girl standing on some rocks

Mia Wichmann is a BSE senior from Wilmington, DE. She is pursuing the biotechnology concentration with a minor in biomedical engineering. Mia hopes to have a successful career in the biopharmaceutical industry with hopes of working on improving protein and vaccine stability and thus accessibility to these novel drugs. The summer after sophomore year, she worked in an oral solid dosage research and development team for Ashland Global, a pharmaceutical company, gaining valuable experience in common formulation and manufacturing processes for tablets. This past summer she returned to Ashland, but working on a different team to assess pH buffers in bioprocessing applications such as cell culture, filtration, and chromatography purification.

During the school year, she is a member of Clay Wright’s lab where she has worked on developing protocols for cloning and yeast transformation in a fungi species to better understand biosynthesis pathways. She is also an active member of the American Society of Agriculture and Biological Engineers (ASABE), and her church community. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking, baking, and hanging out with her friends.

Mia is very passionate about BSE and grateful for the amazing faculty and community. She is immensely grateful for the BSE ambassadors who shared their love of the department when she was at a Virginia Tech prospective student open house in high school. Mia is excited to introduce others to BSE and continue to foster the rich community within our department.
