Julia Riley is a rising senior in BSE from Chantilly, Virginia with a focus in biotechnology, and minors in Biomedical Engineering and Chemistry. She is passionate in increasing medical access to underserved communities and hopes to work in research and development of prosthetics in the future. This past summer, Julia interned at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute as a clinical oncology research intern. Julia’s project focused on an AI software that is able to predict an individual’s 1-5 year risk of developing breast cancer from mammographic images.

For the past three years, Julia has worked in the Johnson Lab on campus as an undergraduate research assistant. This year, she has her very own project looking at MSTN signaling in mice and its impact on muscle size, strength, and stamina. She is also an active member of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, where she serves as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

After graduation, Julia hopes to combine her love of math and science with her passion for helping others. In her free time, she enjoys film photography, scrapbooking, working out, and spending time with friends and family. Julia is so grateful for the BSE department and those who helped her get here and is so excited to share her enthusiasm with prospective students! She is so thankful to have found the BSE department when transferring into the engineering program and hopes to help other students find their way to BSE!
