Maggie Scarborough is from Felton, Pennsylvania, majoring in BSE with a focus in biotechnology.

Maggie is also pursuing minors in Spanish and Biomedical Engineering. She is passionate about  learning new things and applying her knowledge to solve problems related to the environment and  human welfare.

This summer, Maggie interned with Ulliman Schutte. Ulliman Schutte is a water/wastewater construction company that is focused on building a better environment. At Ulliman Schutte, Maggie helped in the pursuit and bid processes of new projects. She spent most of her time organizing contract documents and interacting with subcontractors for the Larchmont Area Sanitary Sewer Improvements Project. This project is unique for Ulliman Schutte because of its proximity to several neighborhoods. It is important for Ulliman Schutte to limit the disturbance to the community while simultaneously providing new infrastructure that will help residents and fight against changing environmental conditions like sea level rise and climate change.

At Virginia Tech, Maggie is an active member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and currently holds an executive position as President. Maggie is also an active member of the Service Without Borders Club.

This summer, Maggie traveled with the Service Without Borders Club to Nepal for a service project. A group of 4 students and 3 faculty went on this trip and their mission was to construct concrete irrigation canals in the mountains of a village called Dhumba. The canals are essential to the village, providing water for crops and livestock. At the end of their 3-week trip, the team successfully constructed about 200 meters of channel. Maggie really enjoyed the opportunity to help the village and learn about their culture and lifestyles. She hopes to return with the group in the summer of 2025.

Maggie is excited to be a BSE mentor and share all the incredible experiences she has had during her time at Virginia Tech. She is proud to be a student in BSE and wants to help new students find their passion and seize all the opportunities this program provides.
